Session 3 on Friday, March 5, from 4:15-4:45 (PT)
Getting on Top of In/At/On Using Corpora

Idiomatic expressions formed with prepositions in, at, and on are notoriously difficult to master because their meaning is hard to predict. However, using corpora as a tool, CELTs can prepare students for the most difficult idiomatic challenges by examining and identifying the contextual patterns in which these idioms appear in order to equip learners to communicate effectively in their God-given callings or circumstances. The presenter will give an overview of the research methodology used for the grammar research question in view, namely, the use of the troublesome prepositions in, at and on in the formation of common idiomatic expressions. In light of the corpus results, the most frequent idiomatic expressions from both formal and informal contexts will then be reviewed, with attention given to the sorting of idioms according to five ideational categories of meaning. Practical teaching suggestions will be discussed. Active audience participation anticipated.
