Lightening Talk on Friday, March 5, from 2:45-3:30 (PT)
Turning a Devotion into an English Lesson

With Rick Warren’s accessible writing style, his devotional, “Open Doors” is literally an open door for students to enter into an American English lesson while learning about God’s will, kindness, and love, in their lives. The Lexile range of his daily devotions is about 600-800, appropriate for third- through fifth-grade reading level. With just a bit of scaffolding, collocations, American Idioms, vocabulary work, reading, listening, speaking, and writing lessons can all be brought in with a short five to eight paragraph essay. These devotions are also a great conversation starter, especially when chosen with the topic of the lesson or with the headlines in mind. Join me for a mini ESL lesson using one of the devotions!
