Biblical Wisdom, Modern Texts, and Engaging Activities
for Thriving Students
McLaughlin’s book Confronting Christianity lists seven biblical commands supported by modern psychology: “it’s more blessed to give than to receive,” “love of money disappoints,” “work works when it’s a calling,” “be content in all circumstances,” “gratitude is good,” “self-control and perseverance helps us thrive,” and “forgiveness is foundational.” These principles make excellent topics for ESL materials which can both give our students valuable wisdom and whet their appetite for the source of that wisdom. This presentation (1) briefly outlines McLaughlin’s work as inspiration, (2) highlights some texts for each principle, and (3) gives examples how the texts can be used in a variety of ESL lessons and classes. For example, a health-based website gives eight reasons why giving is good for you. Four of these can be used to create a jigsaw reading activity.
