Coaching and Vision in TESOL
Coaching and Vision in TESOL
The power of vision has been harnessed in realms as diverse as science, politics, business, sports, Christian ministry, and language learning to name a few (Dornyei, 2020). At an individual level, a compelling personal vision “encompasses dreams, values, passions, purpose, sense of calling, and core identity” (Boyatzis, Smith, & Van Oosteen, 2019, p. 103). Furthermore, “Toidentity-relevant visionary images – or ‘self-concordant visions’ – have long-lasting motivational capacity” (Dornyei, in press), to the point of repeatedly re-igniting motivation when the distractions of life cloud the view and sidetrack vision-directed momentum. This presentation/demonstration provides an overview of the coaching component of a Christian MATESOL program, which aims to develop awareness and capacity-building in students, including through opportunity to develop a self-concordant personal professional vision. Audience members are invited to participate in a representative guided coaching experience on personal professional vision, including consideration of links to spiritual values.
