Borrowed Experience in Pre-Service Teacher Training
Borrowed Experience in Pre-Service Teacher Training
A well-known observation task used in teacher training is “borrowed goods” in which trainees observe the teaching of their practicum sponsor teacher and select something they observed which they would like to use in their future teaching. This presentation introduces the concept of “borrowed experience” in which current pre-service teacher trainees seek to "borrow" from the years of pedagogical, professional, and ministry experience program alumni have accumulated. I will report on a recent class of final-year teacher trainees who conducted the one-hour online interview with their assigned alumnus using questions designed to get the alumni talking about their experiences. The trainees then used their interview notes to write a profile of their alumnus, reflecting on what they heard and identifying the experiences they wanted to “borrow”. I will end by sharing the experiences each trainee chose to “borrow” and their perception of the value of these borrowings for their professional and ministry future.
