A brief history of (CELEA (previously CETC), its mission and values, a list of its current officers and web site staff, and membership statistics.

CELEA History

CELEA -- formerly known as CETESOL -- was formed in 1984 at the TESOL convention in Houston. The group has met informally at every convention since then except for 1986.   The Christian Educators in TESOL Caucus (CETC) was officially organized in 1996 and held its first meeting at the 1997 TESOL convention in Orlando, Florida.  Then in 2008, CETC was reorganized to CELEA.

 

Our Mission

The Christian English Language Educators Association (CELEA) is composed of persons who have a common interest in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages and who share a common belief in Jesus Christ.

 

Goals

CELEA has been established for the following purposes

o to identify with others in TESOL of like faith in Jesus Christ

o to provide a framework for networking among Christians within TESOL

o to create an awareness of the global opportunities for Christian educators in TESOL

o to share and disseminate information regarding effective teaching ideas, materials, and resources

o to foster fellowship and encouragement for Christians within TESOL

 

Current Officers

President  Michael Pasquale

Michael PasqualeMichael Pasquale is Associate Professor of Linguistics and the Director of the MA TESOL program at Cornerstone University (Grand Rapids, MI). He earned his MA and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. His research focus is in sociolinguistics and second language acquisition.

Meredith Bricker "Jan Edwards Dormer, Ed.D., has worked in the field of TESOL for over 20 years, in Canada, Brazil, Indonesia and the U.S. She has taught all ages, and developed curriculum and teacher education programs.  She now directs  an Indonesian M.Ed. program and teaches at Anderson University in Indiana.

Daniel McClary had a background in art before shifting his focus to English, where he has taught most ages and levels over the past 20 years. Recently returned to the US, Daniel spent most of the last decade working in Ethiopia and Germany. Currently, he is directing The Learning Center at Millersville International House (www.mihusa.org) near Lancaster, PA, which offers English and cultural exchange classes to international students. E-list Manager  Andy Bowder

Andy BowderNationality and Location:  English, living in Wales!!

Qualifications:  MA in Applied Linguistics & TESOL; B.Ed.; Dip. TEFL

Current job:  I am currently working as Director of Studies at a small, privately-run Language College in Cardiff called Alpha and Omega College. We provide General English and IELTS preparation to foreign students, many of whom are looking to acheive a good level in IELTS before moving on to study for a Masters or Ph.D. at one of the local universities - or elsewhere in the UK.  Our clientele is mostly from the Middle East (Libya, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, UAE, etc.) though we do have a few students from other parts of the world.

Much of my ESOL teaching has been at the secondary (11-18) school level or with students of teaching and nursing in Nepal.

I have been a member of CETC since 1996, and have previously been the CETC e-list manager and editor of the CETC newsletter.

 

Past Chair  Gena Bennett

Gena Bennett Gena Bennett has been working with ELL for over 8 years; her experience includes curriculum development, teacher training, basic adult education, working with refugee youth, foriegn language teaching, higher education settings, materials design, and community programs.  A member of TESOL and CETC for two years, her research interests include corpus linguistics and second language writing.

Webmaster:  Frank Tuzi

Frank Tuzi image Frank Tuzi, Ph.D., is a professor of TESOL & Technology at Nyack College.  Frank has been involved in TESOL and technology for 15 years as an educator, materials developer, and researcher in the U.S. and Japan.
